When you go to the dentist, you might assume there is only one way to clean your teeth. However, depending on whether you have periodontal disease, your dentist in Mesquite, TX, may recommend a different type of cleaning for you. With the ultimate goal of improving your dental health, the dental team at Town East Dental Group wants to help you avoid gum disease altogether, but if you do get gum disease, we want to keep it from advancing or progressing.

What Is a Regular Dental Cleaning?

When you visit your dentist for a regular dental cleaning, you can expect your dentist and hygienist to perform the following steps:

  • Oral examination – Before your dental cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will look in your mouth for any signs of disease or decay.
  • Scaling –The dental hygienist will remove tartar from your gumline with a special tool.
  • Deep cleaning and polishing – Next, your hygienist will use an electric toothbrush and special toothpaste to clean and polish your teeth.
  • Flossing – Once your teeth are clean, the hygienist will floss your teeth.
  • Rinsing – You will be asked to rinse your mouth to remove any debris.
  • Fluoride treatment – You will receive a fluoride treatment to help protect against cavities until your next dental visit.

What Is a Periodontal Cleaning?

If you are diagnosed with gum disease, we will create a treatment plan for you based on the severity of your condition. Your treatment may include any combination of the following:

  • Improved oral hygiene at home
  • Increased number of scheduled dental cleanings
  • Deep cleanings and scaling below the gumline
  • Medications to help reduce infection
  • Surgical intervention

What Is the Initial Cleaning Cost?

Your gum disease treatment cost will depend on how severe your gum disease is, so your dental office will have to discuss the cost with you. If your gum disease is mild, your cost will be less than if you have advanced gum disease. On average, an initial periodontal cleaning will cost between $150 and $300.

Fortunately, we accept insurance, and we offer third-party financing through CareCredit. In addition, for $330 per year, you can purchase a Town East Dental Group Dental Membership Plan that will cover your annual periodontal exam and a portion of any periodontal treatment you may need. Our professional staff can answer your questions if you need more information about periodontal cleaning costs.
