Dental cleaning in Mesquite, TX

Did you know we have millions of natural bacteria in our mouths that live on our teeth? Fortunately, regular flossing, brushing, and dental exams and cleanings can protect your mouth from these germs. Your Mesquite dentist offers comprehensive dental cleanings to rid your mouth of cavity-causing bacteria and protect your healthy smile.

Practicing good oral hygiene and receiving professional dental cleanings are essential for maintaining a healthy, disease-free mouth. Dental cleanings prevent bacteria from overpopulating and causing issues like dental decay and gum disease. Also, dental exams allow your dentist to evaluate your oral health to ensure we identify any problems in their early stages.

Types of Dental Cleanings

There are four different types of dental cleanings, each with its unique purposes and techniques. Depending on your distinctive smile and the amount and location of plaque and tartar, your dentist can perform one or more of the following dental cleanings.

#1 Prophylaxis Dental Cleaning

Prophylaxis means “to prevent disease,” therefore, prophylaxis dental cleanings prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Prophylaxis cleanings remove plaque and tartar using a dental scaler or water stream. Most patients only require this standard cleaning if they maintain daily hygiene and regular dental checkups.

#2 Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing, also known as a deep cleaning, sanitizes the teeth and gum pockets to treat advanced gum disease. Deep cleanings for periodontitis patients may require multiple appointments.

Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum pockets below the gumline, clearing bacteria and reducing gum inflammation. Root planing smooths the tooth roots, so the gums reattach to the teeth and seal the gum pockets, preventing more plaque from reaching below the gumline.

#3 Periodontal Maintenance Cleaning

Periodontal maintenance cleanings help treat gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum pockets and smoothing the tooth roots. These cleanings are similar to scaling and root planing, but the patient needs them more frequently to maintain gum health.

#4 Gross Debridement Cleaning

Gross debridement cleanings are the most heavy-duty cleaning because they remove copious amounts of plaque and tartar from the teeth. Plaque hardens into tartar, so this cleaning involves using a special instrument to loosen the tartar before the dentist performs a prophylaxis cleaning to finish the appointment.
